Virtue’s Farewell is a novel that follows the parallel characters of Rosalyn Denton and Anton Reicher through the tumultuous, devastating and confusing years of World War I.
A gifted pianist, resolute suffragette and idealist, Rosalyn dreams of a grand future for herself and for the world but instead sees her life take a dramatic detour. Her journey takes her from the hideously corrupt Hattesville prison and its equally corrupt Warden to the horrific conditions of a field hospital in France. Along the way, she is brought to the hard realization that a person’s mistakes and a painful past, including the loss of a fiancee, have a way of haunting one forever.
Anton Reicher, Rosalyn’s counterpart on the other side of the conflict, is also something of an anomaly; a sensitive German soldier, plagued by insomnia brought about by terrifying dreams that have an uncanny knack for coming true. Faced with fighting a deadly war, Reicher tries to hold on to his family, a wife and two sons, in the face of infidelity, his beliefs in the face of a tyrannical superior, and his sanity in the face of a world where the normal rules of engagement no longer apply.
Virtue’s Farewell is a novel about passion and indifference, love and hate, loyalty and betrayal, hope and hopelessness, and ultimately, life and death.

This book is a must read for anyone who loves a great plot with historical background. I began to read and found myself skipping lunch and dinner that first day because I wanted to find out what was happening on the next page. Virtue's Farewell is put together in a way that even someone with only a casual understanding of history can enjoy it, but also includes enough detail for those obsessed with history in the early 20th century to enjoy it, too. I think that balance is one of the story's best attributes. It also includes characters that are interesting, realistic (with their own issues to work out), and thought-provoking. I recommend you give the story a chance the next time you are shopping for a novel to read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I don't usually read anything but legal thrillers, and murder mysteries but this was really really good. A true indication for me is whether a book holds my interest from the beginning and this one did...from start to finish. I found myself wanting more. I hope Thomas writes a sequel!!!
