Unfortunately for students of drink history, this is the 1888 edition, not the 1882. It is given as the 1882 edition on the cover, but I noticed the copyright for all of the graphic plates was plainly listed as 1888. Then I looked at the original title page. 1882 is given only as the original copyright, with the further copyright of 1888 plainly visible. It made me wonder if anyone at the Kessinger Publishing had paid much attention, or if the claim for the 1882 date was allowed for sales appeal. I feel this to be a shameful mis-representation, whether by incompetence or fraud. That said, if the 1888 edition is acceptable for your purposes, this is an acceptable purchase. Unfortunately, the actual 1882 edition does not seem available and it is a matter of question as to whether there were changes and how significant they may have been.
This book is a fair source for studying American drinks before the Volstead Act. I still prefer William Boothby and, the clear knowledge of George Kappeler. Only George Kappeler seems to clearly understand the difference between a mint julep and a mint smash (only one subject that I believe befuddled Jerry Thomas). Both Kappeler and Boothby make clear that it's not an "Old Fashion," but rather the old-fashioned (way of making a) cocktail, and that it could be based on any spirit.

Quality of the book is excellent. Nothing wrong with the seller. Just the content isn't the greatest. If you are looking to make authentic old-school drinks, this is a good book. But most doesn't apply to today.
